Now that I'm officially a graduate (eeek!), I find myself focusing just a little more intently on fashion week, in particular the preliminary buzz around the new faces (which I usually picked up towards the end of NYFW). I found myself on the ever brilliant models.com and finally had time to look through the show packages, and I can't believe I left it so long! The creativity, wit and style have gone into the images - Ford Models was a particular favourite of mine - makes it worth spending some time with show packages, if for no other reason to pick out your top 10 of the season.

With Wimbledon just around the corner, and bikini season well under way, what better way to celebrate than with the new Nike campaign shot by Annie Leibovitz?

From the 'Make Yourself' campaign the shot features Allyson Felix, Chinese tennis player Li Na, Algerian-French dancer Sofia Boutella, British hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton, Russian-born tennis star Maria Sharapova, USA goalkeeper Hope Solo and Australian surfer Laura Enever.

It's certainly got me to dig out my Nike trainers and make my way to the gym - a long over due trip!

10 for 10: Paris Couture Spring 2011

I'll try and to keep this post to as few words as possible, because I can't even begin to describe some of these looks. Here are my favourite looks, make up and accessories from the wonderful world of couture:

It would see there is a new optimism in Paris these few days, these looks are so light and airy - even at Armani with it's futuristic light reflecting materials. This has been one of my favourite couture seasons for awhile, even though Chanel was more subdued than usual I love the silhouette of the long floaty skirt with satin pointy flat shoes. I can't believe I'm starting to favour flats over heels, but such is the power of Karl Lagerfeld

Aymeline Valade

I have been desperate to post about this new face! I'm not sure why I've left it so long but I just had to share, as she has the most captivating look. Aymeline Valade, represented by Women model management and FM Models in London made her major debut at Balenciaga S/S 11:

After her appearance, things got a little quieter but then the Pre Fall collections came out and she only made an appearance for Balenciaga and Alexander Wang. If there were two brands to ever make a models career these are the ones to appear with:

She has such an intense look, that photographs beautifully. Then she appeared in the first Alexander Wang mainline campaign (shot by Craig McDean)

Aymeline really rocks the tomboy clothes, and doesn't get lost in Karl Templer's exquisite styling. For a new face, she photographs in such a confident self-assured way. I'm so intrigued to see what the next runway season brings for her, whether she will appear everywhere or just walk a select few blue chip runway appearances.

Joan, revisited

It feels like so long since I've been posting regularly, but the last three months I've been wrapped up in my dissertation, but the 10,000 words are done, bound and handed in. I can finally get back to blogging - a month before the A/W 11 shows kick off! I'm lucky enough to be at London Fashion Week again this season, and I'm really hoping to bump into a certain Joan Smalls. I first blogged about her all the way back in April 2010 and I was just thinking how far she has come.

For the S/S 11 campaign season she has both Gucci and Roberto Cavalli:

...and she's rumoured to appear in the (as yet unpublished) Stella McCartney campaign.

My favourite of her recent run of work, however is this editorial:

Shot by Mario Sorrenti it appears in the February issue of Vogue Paris. Joan is such a great mover, and in this editorial she has the presence of a veteran model with her compelling gaze and awareness of how the clothes move. She's one of the most versatile models today.

I can't wait to see the Stella McCartney campaign!

Work Magazine

Finding this magazine feels like an early Christmas present. I'm an avid reader of TheFashionSpot and have been for many years, and whilst browsing it the other day I found such a wonderful new(ish) magazine - Work magazine.

Isn't that such a striking cover? The cover star is model Tasha Tilberg, who isn't as regular on the runways as she used to be, but she she still pops up in only the coolest publications. Just looking at this cover is making me want to get a septum piercing.

There's not alot of information about the magazine but from what I can gather it's a quarterly based art/fashion magazine, this is issue number three. It's also prooving difficult to track down a copy, for all of you in LA you can pick up a copy at the Marc Jacobs bookstore on Melrose (as if you need an excuse to go down there anyway!). Otherwise, you can order online via the website. If you have a a spare five minutes head on over to the website, and have a browse through because I'm so excited to see a a magazine like this, with one of my favourite cover stars. I can't wait to see how this exciting project develops.

Jewellery fit for a superhero

This has to be coolest collaboration I've seen for ages. Noir Jewellery + DC Comics! I'm sure everyone has an inner comic book geek side to themselves. I, for one, love Batman. I have done since I was a little kid.
These suitably dark jewels will certainly stand out from all the Disney jewellery around at the moment, and it would be a definite talking point.

These editorials highlight how beautiful masculine, oversize clothes are on such feminine models with strong features. It's an interesting trend that's emerging in some of the indie magazines. I was pleasantly surprised to see it showcased on the red carpet by Leighton Meester:

She looks so sexy in this look, it's slightly disheveled which works and I like the flowing curled hair. I'm going to be copying these looks, just as soon as the snow disappears, because there is nothing attractive about having to wear ten sets of layers all the time.

Sorry for the terrible lack of posts! I'm trapped in dissertation madness right now, but very much enjoying it. I'm in such a classic mood right now, but I'm also stuck just wearing black all the time. Luckily, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen have really perfected how to mix different fabrics whilst making all black still look fantastically modern and put together. They seem to really be in tune with their style right now, and I love how luxurious and wearable this look is:

There's practically snow on the ground in England right now, it's that cold. So of course my thoughts turn to fur coats, I own a vintage fox fur coat with huge shoulder pads but I love seeing the way fur is styled. This editorial is from 1999 and published in US Harpers Bazaar starring Frankie Rayder (seriously, if you're not familiar with her work, check her out she's as sexy as Freja). I'm taking a trip to Budapest in December, and I'm fur hats and coats are going to be the only way to stay warm.

Frida Gustavsson at Dsquared...an unusual source of inspiration.

There must be something strange in the champagne over at Milan fashion week, because my usual fvaourites; Jil Sander, Fendi & Prada were huge let downs for me. The biggest being Jil Sander, the shapes were unflattering even on the models and Anna Wintour spent the whole show tapping away at her Blackberry. For me, it's the most disspointing collection since Raf Simons joined the house.
So where did the great looks come from? I never though I'd say this but Roberto Cavalli and Dsquared2 are what I remember most about Milan. Believe me, it pains me to say this. Of course Bottega Veneta is never a let down, Alberta Feretti was stunning and Marni was wonderful.

I mean this Roberto Cavalli collection is just so...Shakira in the Whenever, Wherever video. Maybe after what feels like three weeks of minimalism at NY, London and parts of Milan I can find a Roberto Cavalli collection wildly fun. There's fringing! Sequins! Snake Print!. Another stand out is the wonderful make up, courtesy of the master, Pat McGrath. This has to be the most flattering and simple make up I've seen in Milan it made all the models look incredible:

I just can't help loving it, maybe my mind will change after seeing Paris.

I may be incredibly biased but London Fashion Week has to my favourite fashion week, it's always so varied, interesting and relevant. I'm so lucky to have been able to attend the shows for the last three seasons, and I've finally had a spare half an hour to catch up on the best of LFW. After an especially monotonous NYFW (seriously, was it just me or was everything the same? Proenza and Donna Karan were the only stand outs) it's a welcome return to colour - glorious colour - at LFW.

London certainly hasn't ignored the minimalist trend that swept through New York but through a variety of fabrics and cuts London has really stood out for making minimalism look fun in a way that only London designers can do.

LFW Day 2: Simon Ekrelius

If you've ever wondered what rain weather couture would look like. I think I've found the answer. The Simon Ekrelius show at On/Off on Saturday was a collision of transparent fabrics, dramatic hats and amazing plays on monochrome. I think the models have to be applauded too, for walking in nothing but a completely transparent trench coat.

I was lucky enough to go backstage before the show, and I got this fabulous shot of Simon himself in a DIY t-shirt he had made that morning:

I think that perfectly sums up most Londoner's feelings about the Pope visit to the city that no one actually wanted. Ahem.

Back to the clothes. The styling was wonderful, with peach coloured lips and lilac extensions running through the hair to take a more paired down approach to the two tone colour hair that was so prevalent last season.

These have to be the town stand out pieces from the show. But the show also featured some fantastic pointed shoulder pads, high waisted monchrome leather trousers and more wearable playsuits.

LFW Day 1: Eun Jeong presentation

I was thrilled to get a chance to view the Eun Jeong presentation for my first show of London Fashion Week S/S 11. Presentations can feel a little cold, and impersonal but in a building above Covent Garden Eun Jeong hosted a beautiful presentation, with an intimate atmosphere.

The 2008 Fashion Fringe showcased a collection with wonderful draping and interesting digital prints as well as the sparkliest shoes I'd seen so far at London Fashion Week and with a very practical heel too!
Models were draped around the room, lounging on antique chairs or leaning on furntiture decked with trinkets, whilst soft lighting and gentle music set the tone. Eun named English summers as a key inspiration for the collection and you can really see from the pictures how this translated into the garments.

Oh, and the perfect way to finish off? Mini sparkly cupcakes of course!

Frida & Hanne rock NY

I think for most people who follow model style the two most interesting models right now are Frida Gustavsson and Hanne Gaby-Odiele. Their style couldn't be more different, with Frida favouring laid back tailoring and brilliant pops of colour whilst Hanne favours a more grunge and extreme look. Both styles are equally distinctive. I love these two pictures from NY Fashion week because it perfectly demonstrates the difference between the two models but also sums up their street style appeal:

Fashion's Night Out was again an amazing experience, and it seemed to have got alot bigger this year with more shops and celebrities taking part. My first shop of the night was Marc by Marc Jacobs on Mount Street where you could get a free Marc Jacobs Bang t-shirt, complete with naked Marc on the front and you could become a campaign star for the day:

MAC's guide to Cat Eye Make Up

I usually avoid posting about make up, because there's just so much going on in the world of beauty I would like to do it justice, and not just post about something everyone already knows about. I'm also a bit of a beauty amateur, so I was so glad to find a really helpful make up tutorial from fashionista.com + MAC cosmetics. It makes what can be a very daunting make up style achievable, and with all the 1960's inspired clothes for the fall season, now is the perfect time to get practicing.

Whilst I'm on the subject of beauty, I just have to share Tom Ford's new Black Orchid nail polish:

Isn't that the perfect shade? It's dark and luxurious and a great shade for fall. I'm starting to get so excited about the fall season, and with Fashion's Night Out tomorrow I'm going to be trying out some of the new fall looks on offer.

Regular readers of my blog (I hope there's at least one!) will know I've had a long love affair with Levi's. Everything from the campaigns, to the fit and to that wonderful rich heritage. Well, now Levi's have only gone and done it again; they've finally created jeans that fit to your shape rather than your size.
For many women jeans shopping is a nightmare, trying to find somewhere that fits on legs, waist and ass is near enough impossible. Today I was lucky enough to be one of the first to experience Levi's new Curve ID range:

I've never seen double denim look so good, I'm obsessed with the Levi's jean shirts too. I can gladly report that the jeans fit like a dream (I'm a slight curve) and are so comfortable! I've had far too many pairs of jeans that have no stretch and I have to lie on the floor to put them on...not such a great look. Luckily this service is coming to all Levi's stores as well as House of Fraser & Harrods, and it's so useful to find out what shape you are instead of size. Once you've had your measurements taken, a curve consultant takes you through all the washes and cuts, I could have spend hours trying on all the different styles but opted for a dark wash in the skinny cut.

I'm already recommending the service to my friends!

How do they do it? They stand at a nose over 5ft 1 and still manage to layer perfectly without drowning in fabric. I imagine it's the years of practice, but they've got this down to a fine art. I love how their outfits seem almost coordinated, and this looks like an editorial shot to me. Mary Kate's trousers are a perfect fit, and I love the simple white shirt Ashley has on. They are by far the most interesting celebrities to to me, both in terms of style and personality.
I often browse over at my-wardrobe.com to the Elizabeth & James department because it reminds me of the the twins used to dress, whilst The Row is how they dress right now. It makes a perfect mix for fans too. My two favorites were:

Celebrity aside, it's amazing to think these girls are only 24 and producing clothes like this, I can't wait for fashion week to roll round and see what they produce next.

Why do I do it? I shouldn't visit Net-A-Porter, Matches, Saks & Barney's website, it's so maddeningly depressing. I think it's the appeal of seeing runway favorites being turned into commerce and how they appear without all the wonderful styling, make up and runway. As these images will just fester on my laptop, whilst I whist fully sigh at their beauty I thought I may as well share them. Note the depressingly dreary colour pallette, but bear in mind there hasn't been a ray of sun in London for what feels like months, and I'd love to snuggle up in the cashmere The Row grey top.

Mulberry for...Party dresses?

I've never really been a fan of Mulberry, all the bags look the same and everyone has one. They're just too British and conservative, yet I've noticed some great party dresses in the Fall 10 collection, and they've been popping up on not some conservative lovelies like Liv Tyler, Leighton Meester, Olivia Palermo & Jessica Stroup.

It still needs some refining but somehow these looks make the brand feel a little less stuffy, and of course Mulberry produced perhaps the most fun and charming campaign of the season:

This campaign has explored the more whimsical and fun side of British fashion and it makes it such a stand out campaign, shot by Steven Meisel and starring Abbey Lee and Hanne. The brand seems to be going in an interesting direction and aiming for much bigger things rather than 'just an It bag' company.

Autumn Leaves

It may only be August but my mind is firmly in Autumn, so I was glad to stumble along this fantastically simple fall editorial from Elle Italia, it was published back in Feburary 2010. It stars Noot Sear (which may be one of the most beautiful names I've heard), a model that was huge in the early 2000's and has now faded somewhat. In fact, she's so stunning she starred at Mona Lisa in a YSL perfume campaign from 2002. I love how simple the concept is for this editorial, and especially the soft lighting. It makes me so eager for autumn to appear.

I seriously reccomend checking out her profile over at One Management, it's so beautifully put together - with polaroids, video and animation. It's so great to see Noot once again in the big magazines.

Bottega in Motion

This is definitely in the running for my favourite campaign of the season, I love that the campaign manages to produce great photography, showcase the collection and Alla Kostromichova is such a great mover, she really brings what could be a very stark campaign to life. Shot by Robert Longo who is also a sculptor as well as a photographer, I feel like bringing in a photographer without a fashion background can really bring a fresh new angle to advertising campaigns.

Whilst I'm on the subject of Alla, a shot has leaked from Roberto Cavalli's new book celebrating 40 years of the brand, of course Mert + Marcus shot this and it features some of Roberto's favourite images from the brands past and is in any surprise Alla is featured?

Can pink be chic?

With all the celebrity festival looks coming in right now, the one that stood out most to me is English singer Eliza Doolittle. I'm not a fan of pink generally, but something about the shade of her dress really stands out (and that she managed to find a matching colour Vitamin Water to accessorize with!) - especially in the dull surroundings of a festival. But as an avoider of pink it got me to thinking about other pink fashion moments, and some images really stuck out in my head. So maybe pink isn't as bad I think?

Ale for Russh

Russh magazine is my new favourite magazine. The bi-monthly Australian fashion magazine has been producing some achingly beautiful and original editorials and this year in particular has been a great year for the magazine. The last issue featured rising star Ieva Laguna in an editorial which depicted a love affair with a painter, and the pictures were quickly all over the blogs and tumblr:

I love the passion and the energy behind this editorial, shot by Will Davidson the model couple become a drama and a story rather than just posing for a fashion magazine.
For the August/September issue of Russh Victoria's Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio appears on the cover - once again shot by Will Davidson - and once again it's a dramatic story with beautiful billowing clothes, beautiful poses and a real sense of the theatrical.

Aline Returns

Aline Weber has a fascinating career, she doesn't work consistently churning out editorials, but come fashion week she only walks the best shows, in Paris; YSL, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and makes an appearance at Alexander Wang in NYC. But this season she appeared at Couture for the first time:

With that some blue chip editorial started coming in; Harpers Bazaar and Vogue Paris. Aline seems to only appear in the best magazines - a stunning Vogue Germany editorial appeared in the May Issue and the Aline resurgence began.

It's great to see Aline get more work, because she's such an interesting beauty and those cool green eyes look amazing on the runway. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the rest of the editorial season will be, and she's certainly one to watch for the coming Spring 2011 shows.

Musings on Muse # 22

Muse is a magazine I often admire but rarely buy. Firstly, it's £12 and it's not a very consistent publication. It usually has three different covers - generally featuring models, until it shot the weird Lindsay Lohan as Jesus story. But the new issue is amazing.

Perfect Covers

It's a battle of the bombshells with Gisele, Isabeli and Angela. I love the variations in the cover, how sensual Gisele's is and the nice touch of graphic art on Angela's cover. Styling seems to give way to beautiful models in simple but effective poses. These are always my favourite type of covers.

The inside content offers a mix of new faces, rising stars and established supermodels. Ruby Aldridge makes one of her first major publication editorial appearance:

The Rising Star: Eniko

Eniko is absolutely everywhere at the moment, every new magazine I pick up she's there; on the cover of V, inside V and in the new publication Gentlewoman. I must say I prefer these black and white and simple editorials compared to her usual bombshell mode. She has such an interesting face that is full of expression that she doesn't need to be a bombshell at all times. Her work in this style is some of my favourite. It would be such a shame if Eniko is relegated to Victoria's Secret style modelling, as she is so much more than that.

The Uber Models:

The issue seems like a title weight prize between three of the best models of our generation, it's impossible to pick a favourite as all of their editorials are as strong as each others. With Gisele acting as Brigitte Bardot, Isabeli roaming along the beach and Angela as a hippie all soft lighting and transparent florals. I don't know how I'm going to pick a favourite!

Pringle of Scotland

I can't believe I overlooked this collection. It was only after reading an interview with Panos Yiapanis I discovered he had styled the fall collection, so of course I was straight to style.com to check out the collection.
Pringle has had somewhat of a merry-go-round history with designers at the house, but the brand's creative director is now Claire Waight Keller (she joined the brand in 2006, after stints at Tom Ford's Gucci and Calvin Klein womenswear). Her fall collection was just magical, with baggy wader style trousers, amazingly cut leather skirts and asymmetric coats. It surely stands as one of London's stand out collections, and certainly one to watch.

It reminds me in places of Phi, which is a label I really miss. But I just adore this tough look but with beautifully constructed pieces (the leather skirt in particular is a real stand out).

Oh, and for one of the most interesting fashion interviews I've read for a very long time, take a peek at this interview with show stylist Panos Yiapanis, it may be one of the most sobering reads I've read for awhile.
Stylist to Courtney Love and frequent collaborator with my beloved Rick Owns he's one of the most interesting but under-appreciated stylists in the industry, and his quote regarding stylists are more famous now for their Fashion Week looks than their work is becoming a sad truth.

Resort Round Up

I feel like the resort collections are the forgotten gem, the mid-season slump is a little better and September and the Fall collections seems just a little closer. The collections never seem to get enough editorial coverage, but as is the case with Alexander Wang I often prefer his Resort and Pre-Fall collections to main line.

Anyway, here's some stand out looks I found looking through the collections.

Alexander Wang

I love the updated Coco duffle bag, and I wish Alexander did tailoring more because I love the proportions of both these looks. It's much stronger than most of his Fall 10 collection.

Bottega Veneta

Rag & Bone

I love Rag & Bone's clothes, and especially the styling. The layering is impeccable and so is the mix of fabrics, and it's always their fall collections I enjoy the most. Fresh from winning the CFDA award for menswear the duo are certainly on the rise.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

The collection is inspired by 'a dancers wardrobe' which translates to no fuss basics and cute party dresses. I love the simplicity of this collection, how easy it would be to recreate on a smaller budget. In my mind this is the quintessential Marc by Marc Jacobs collection and it's well worth checking out the whole collection.

Stella McCartney

How fun is this!? It's just so...charming. These clothes could get lost on a white studio background but set in what appears to be a garden party these clothes comes to life. It's how I imagine they would be worn. I love the stunning blue palette that is used throughout, especially when you combine them all together:

Dreaming of Dries

Now that I'm on my summer break, I find myself browsing through style.com alot more. I love going to my favourite designers and looking back through the collections. Dries Van Noten is a designer I adore, and the first place I got a designer bargain (metallic gold heels from S/S 08 for £40!). The clashing of prints and fabrics is always a look I'd like to achieve, and the fashion geek in me really enjoys seeing a designers progression from early collection. Which is why Dries Van Noten S/S 04 stood out to me so much...

Dries is a brand I have always associated with fabulous prints and great styling, so it was interesting to me to see such a pared down collection - but I love the silky and simple dresses. Inspite of the collection being six years old it still seems so relevant now.

One of my favourite Dries collection remains S/S 08 because it seems so quintessentially Dries.

And my main source of inspiration for fall remains the laid back vibe from Dries Fall 10

I just can't get enough of the wind swept hairstyle, full skirt silhouette and casual relaxed tailoring and the famous Dries print still appears here and there. I'm sure I'll be blogging about this collection alot in the lead up to Fall but it's the perfect fall collection.

As a loyal Sex And the City fan, of course I was straight to the cinema on Friday to see the new film. I was bitterly disappointed as they seem to be taking the film in a completely different direction to the sheer brilliance of the TV show. It's become too Hollywood; the plots are hardly believable and the humor is forced.

In fact the only thing that got me through the screening was the pre-SATC cocktails I'd had, with Skyy vodka - my personal favourite was the Cosmopolitan chaser, served with just a dash of champagne on top. Oh, and Patricia Field herself has joined fabulous forces with Skyy vodka to create a limited edition bottle and drink that I'm sure even Carrie would approve of, so dash down to Harvey Nichols to get the gift box as you'll need the whlle bottle to get through the film!
During the film one pleasant surprise however was Cynthia Nixon, she seemed to act as a reminder of the old SATC - not caught up in drama instead, she steadied the plot and remained a voice of reason. Her clothes were the least OTT, and she looked great.
That's why I was so glad to see her amazing clothes for the campaign trail, in particular the blue Narciso Rodriguez dress she wore to the London premiere.

It's such a great colour on her, and hair is the perfect strawberry blonde shade.

Dree continues to shine

It's not been long since I posted that stunning gold make up editorial featuring Anja from Vogue Nippon. This time it's the same photographer, and the same magazine but this time it's Dree's chance to shine. The girl really knows her angle, and this is one of the softest, most beautiful beauty editorials I've seen for a reall long time. Are Vogue Nippon the only magazine still placing some emphasis on the beauty editorial? I hope not, because they are the hidden gem of the magazine.

Lara Stone's guide to the wedding

I'm really not one for wedding dresses, or weddings in general to be honest. They generally all look the same to me, same classic taste and same 'modest' but 'flattering' dress. Then Lara Stone came along, the gap toothed Bardot wonder, of course she wasn't going down to the traditional route, and I am so glad. Maybe, Lara will make weddings cool again...

Step 1:

Sort out the party dress. It's unacceptable to stay in that huge wedding number for the after party, so Lara has opted for the most glittery and opulent dress she could find. Luckily, both dresses were designed by Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy, which meant they stayed away from the Dolly Parton type glitter dress.
I can't believe how skinny she looks - her waist is tiny!

Step 2:

Choose a modern wedding dress. I love how this dress is still the traditional white, but it is bought bang up to date with the delicate lace and gold beading. The thigh high split is a great twist too. This dress is so very Lara.

Step 3:

Fabulous guests. Okay, so David's choice of guests were questionable at best (a cavalcade of mildly funny British comedians) but Lily & Tom were clearly Lara's choice. Lily looks beautiful, and like a true model guest. Unfortunately, there aren't many pictures of the 'fashion' guests, but rumour has it Bette Franke was the bridesmaid!

If I was better at applying make up, then I'd wear golden eyeshadow or pigment a lot more often. It looks so beautiful on blue or green eyes, and highlights a tan better than any other. So, I precariously apply it every now and then, usually when editorials pop up that feature it. I'm having a major gold rush at the moment having just discovered this editorial. It's the lovely Anja Rubik shot by Nathaniel Goldberg for Vogue Nippon back in May last year. Oh, and the most important detail? Make up by Diane Kendal. I just had to share it, because it's such a wonderfully simple formula for an editorial but has stunning results.

Anja is also the only model that makes me want to dye my hair blonde for the first time in years.

Now that the weather is England is finally turning towards summer (inspite of the volcanic ash cloud!), I have been noticing some of the great summer editorials coming out. I've blogged about US Elle before, and I really hadn't realised how good it was. Joe Zee is a great creative director, and the variety of models and stylists used in Elle US is fantastic. In fact, I even think it beats US Harpers for editorial content. The cover stars are still a little iffy (Fergie in Burberry, anyone) but I had to share this editorial with vintage supermodel Rie Rasmussen shot by Max Farago and styled by Mel Ottenberg.

Kate Kils Coachella

To be honest, Kate Bosworth has never been a style favourite of mine - she just popped up quite alot in magazines best dressed but never really did anything radically different. She seems a little too reliant on her stylist, I've never seen many interviews with her where she seems to have any real love for fashion so it all comes off a little too fake an try hard.
I only started paying attention to her when she started dating True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgård, and admitedly that was only to look at paparazzi pictures of him rather than her. That was until this weekends Coachella festival, taking place in the California desert it seems a million miles away to the skuzzy British festivals I'm used to.

Day 1:

Boots by Isabel Marant & Dress by Topshop.
I like how she manages to mix neutrals with her pale blonde hair and not look completely washed out. Although this isn't my favourite, but maybe I'm just jealous because there is no way you could wear neutrals at Reading Festival without it being decorated by Carling and cigarette ash by the end of the day.

Day 2

Dress By Suno & Bag Mulberry Leah
I'm not a fan of Mulberry as they usually look too generic but I love the shape of this one, and the different colour strap. But the dress is the real star here, it fits perfectly and is such a stand out shade. But this isn't the first time this dress has got such coverage, it's in the April issue of US Vogue worn by the divine Jessica Stam:

Day 3

Finally, someone who can pull of a leotard. This is how I think they should be worn, not as the main feature of an outfit but merely a supporting role. The white lace top stops the look from becoming too hipstery (which celebrities tend to at Coachella..) and is that a tiny Mulberry I spy?

All in all, Kate played it pitch perfect at Coachella. And why wouldn't you with Alexander at your side?

The Garden of Earthly Delights

I was so excited when I saw this new Dazed & Confused editorial pop up in my inbox, styled by Robbie Spencer and shot by Ben Toms. The cover features a beautiful Tilda Swinton, and if that wasn't enough reason to grab a copy, check out this editorial.
I love how such an earthly editorial is shot in black and white for once, instead of flooded in dreamy light. It gives such a different feel to the editorial, and it features one of my favourite new models Amanda Nørgaard (catch her in the new Topshop campaign too!).

Miss Joan

I don't know why I've left it so long to blog about Joan Smalls. The 22 year old Puerto Rican beauty started off on the catalogue circuit, modelling for commerical brands until she met the model maker that is Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy, and an exclusive appearance at Givenchy Spring 2010 couture followed.

But it was Fall 2010 that would be her breakout season, 44 shows and appearances at Prada, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander & Gucci.

Joan has the regal look of Liya but the commerical appeal of Noémie Lenoir, so it's not surprise that her first major editorial appearance was in Vogue Italia April, holding her own against such veterans as Amber & Lara. Oh, and of course it was shot by Meisel.

With rumours of a Givenchy campaign to follow, it's hardly surprising that Joan has become the model to watch for the Fall 10 season.

In Vogue with your skin out

Raquel Zimmermann is up there with Anja and Abbey Lee as the best movers in front of the camera, and it seems like every editorial Raquel shows up in has the potential to be a classic. She's a veteran, and has been in the game for over a decade, and her experience always shines through. But she is never boring, just always a classic.
I had to post this editorial from Vogue Nippon May 2010, because it's easily the best editorial of the year so far. With Inez & Vinoodh behind the lense and George Cortina styling, I just love everything about this.

The deep golden tan, black and white clothes mixed with statement jewellery makes the studio setting really stand out, but it's Raquel's movememnt that brings it to life.

Levi's Is Right On The Money

Today I had the privilege to be my invited to a tour of the new Levi's store on Regent Street, London before the store opens at midday tomorrow. I've had a long running appreciation of the Levi brand, my first pair of jeans when I was two years old were a pair of mini 501's, and that was closely followed by a jean jacket from Levi's as well. I still wear 501's now in the acid wash and they are the perfect jean. Not many brands have such a rich and long history.
It was a seriously cool affair, the whole store is designed to look like the inside of the Levi's factory, with bare brick walls and overheard lights to show case the clothes. There was also rolls of fabric and scissors displayed in glasses cases.
The first thing you notice at the front of the store as it's laid out like a gallery, celebrating real Londoner's in creative jobs:

This girl happened to by favourite, as she had the best blue hair I've ever seen.
The store had a very indigo theme to it, as the manager explained that they wanted the store to have an almost industrial feel to it. Yet, it certainly wasn't a sparse or intimidating store.

The array of jean's was dazzling, every cut was organised into sections, and below it you could see every wash you could get from it. From there you were given a style number, like M6 and then you could select the jeans from a stand behind you. Which, if you know what you want sounds like it's going to take the stress out of shopping for jeans.

The staff there are also there to help you find the perfect fit, and also a little bit of a history lesson about the brand. The bottom floor has a whole section dedicated to my beloved 501's:

The store seemed to cater a lot more for the customer than just to make sales, they have encapsulated Levi's rich history under one roof (check out the pair of Levi's found in a mine in California ten years ago that turned out to be from the 1920's , when you visit!), and it's worth having a look just to check out such an interesting store.

After posting this video I got to thinking about some of my favourite fashion films, and by far the best I've ever seen is Daria for Prada, reading an old Buddhist poem called 'Thunder Perfect Mind' she has a perfect narration voice, and the advert is long enough that it runs like a short film.

Changing Direction

I love US Vogue. I truly do, it's a magazine that cannot be judged by it's cover, but I've been buying it for the last five years. As an aspiring journalist the writing style of the magazine is something I really appreciate, and I think it has definitely improved my writing. I love how consistent it is, too many magazines waver with trends and rarely product anything truly memorable, but I always look forward to picking up a copy. The model casting too is fantastic, they may not feature the new girls - but rather the great movers, it's no surprise that the likes of Raquel, Karlie & Caroline are all featured in Vogue so often. So, I just had to share this editorial with Karlie in the April issue of Us Vogue - with her fantastic movement and facial expressions she makes what could be a dull studio shoot come alive. And as always, perfect styling from Grace Coddington.

The first shot is especially interesting to see Ann Demeulemeester styled to look so formal and clean, and I much prefer full length skirts now, especially for day wear, they are just so easy to style up or down.

Anne Valérie Hash Fall 10 & Louis Vuitton

Sorry for the lack of posting recently, I've been snowed under with work, and am still sifting through all the Fall collections. I'm loving the laid back approach to Fall for day wear, because by night I want to dress like a Louis Vuitton girl, and by day this collection is one of the most appealing for casual wear:

Anne Valérie Hash:

I adore the way the tulle has been layered with sweatshirts, and the great pair of brogues that would be sure to become a wardrobe staple. The simple plait and barely there make up just adds to the look.

But as always I can never stick to one style of clothing, and Louis Vuitton was just a dream collection for me. I love it when Marc decides to go for glamour because he always pulls it off beautifully, the closing dresses could even be Oscar gowns - this was such a strong collection from Marc and one that will stay with me when I start building my Fall wardrobe, it was just wonderful:

Giles Deacon A/W 10

This show had by far the best model casting of the season thus far, what a show it was! I'm so glad to see the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley returning to the runway, their return reminds me of the Fall 2005 season when I first started looking at runway shows. It's not a skinny vs less skinny debate, but it's just so nice to see the Victoria's Secret lovelies back at Paris Fashion Week.
Giles has always carefully selected the right models for his shows, right back to his early days when he featured the likes of Adriana Lima and Karolina Kurkova, and this show seemed like a 'best of' of models.

LFW: Menswear: Aitor Throup

After the madness of the past five days what a welcome relief is what to finally work some menswear shows. Generally, they seem a lot more relaxed and of course the hair and make up takes alot less time. My first show of the day was Aitor Throup, and it wasn't a show but an installation, it was easily one of my favourite to attend, I just loved the concept and I hope my pictures do the installation justice. Walking around I couldn't help but think that if anyone ever doubts that fashion is art is to look at installations just like this one.

It's especially interesting that inspite of the conceptual nature of the installation there's some great tailoring and pieces amongst the art of the installation:

I like the way the red leather is stitched on to the bottom of the trouser to almost look like a red soul of a shoe....

I found these trousers to be especially interesting as they seemed to be made with raw sequins, it almost resembles fish scales. It just seemed like such a great use of texture for a pair of trousers.

After last seasons antics, I was so glad to be back at Issa again this season, it's always such a fun show to be at with perfect hair and bright make up. After running in from a snowy London, Issa had the best backstage food with cups of tea and chocolate cornflake cakes. The clothes this season were alot more formal but still sparkled with the fun sense of dressing that Issa has become famous for. In particular this season there were some great shoes and bags.

After the crazy atmosphere of Fashion East, Holly Fulton was alot more relaxed affair. Taking place on the 3rd floor of Somerset House at night, the air was filled with hair dryers and chatting models. I love the classic up do and red lips, and the Louboutin shoes are divine!

Fashion East has been one of the most fun shows this week, with three different designers; Nasir, Heikki & Michael van der Ham. Taking place in the vaults of Somerset House it gives the whole show a very different mood, going backstage as like discovering some secret fashion show with models in full body paint in one room, ethereal floaty dresses in another and dresses with harness detail in the final room. The variety in the following pictures I hope begins to show what a wonderful and varied backstage area it was, it really felt like being at the Rio Carnival:

What a start to London Fashion Week! Hakaan is one of the most exciting brands I've seen for awhile, for a show debut the front row included Kate Moss & Carine Roitfeld, whilst Natalia, Lara, Anja & Natasha walked the show. The pieces were a master of construction, and very, very sexy. Something that London often misses out on.

I can't seem too work up too much enthusiasm about the New York shows right now, I'm not sure, but there seems to be a long shadow cast over proceedings. There has still been some beautiful shows, and I found myself with some unexpected show choices. Alexander Wang was once again such a disappointment, but there's still been some wonderful shows with such perfect layering and a beautiful dark colour palette.

Cushnie Et Ochs
I'm linking to this brand because it is such a new brand, it's a label created by two women and their Fall 10 show had such a perfect mood about it, the mixing of fabrics and the ponyskin boots are wonderful.

Doo Ri
Does this show ever let down? Such a laid back look but with polished fabrics and perfect draping.

Richard Chai Love
I really love the way this show is styled, there's a lot going on but it doesn't seem to overpower the models. The odd sequin fabric or fur thrown in really breaks it up. That strong red lip is divine too, especially for such a grungey mood in the clothes.

This is a difficult blog for me to write, and one I wasn't sure whether to write. It's hard not to fall into lazy cliches and insincere words when paying tribute to someone. I lack the words right now to even start to describe my all consuming despair about the death of Lee Alexander McQueen. As an aspiring writer, his show was the one I wanted to go to most, he was the person I wanted to interview the most - I pictured a life of wearing his designs, and a constant amazement at his brilliance.

Genius is a word that's thrown around too freely, and as such it has lost any kind of meaning. His creativity will be unparalleled, what a showman he was. I don't want to to say too much more, but when I first heard the news a quote from Matisse immediately began swimming around in my head:

"Creativity takes courage."

Here comes Fashion Week

With New York Fashion Week starting today and London Fashion Week starting in a week (!) I found myself looking through my S/S 10 Backstage pictures, and found this shot that perfectly sums up everything about the backstage madness. This was shot at Issa about half an hour before the show kicked off, and all the photographers standing on make up chairs are trying to get a shot of Ms. Naomi Campbell herself. I can't wait to be back there again, model spotting and viewing all the clothes before they hit the runway. I'm going to keep Between Every Line updated as frequently as possible as I get the best model shots and share them here. Bring on the clothes!

Ranya Rocks

Ranya Mordanova is such a striking model the noir dark eyes, bleached eyebrows and bowl cut make her quite something on the runway, but she hasn't had as much editorial coverage, althought she had a recent Vogue Italia editorial so she is certainly on the rise and I'm so glad to see her getting more attention. I spotted her in the new Dazed & Confused (February) shot by Ben Toms and styled by Katie Shillingford. Ranya's a perfect choice for the editorial with such raw unfinished clothes.

Julia Hafstrom

I was flicking through the Feburary issue of Teen Vogue, (I'm only just still a teenager but I just adore the fashion coverage and style of Teen Vogue). When I noticed Swedish model Julia Hafstrom. She's an interesting model and had the perfect early start to her career (Prada campaign and Vogue Italia editorial) and I strangely didn't really notice her until I saw the above picture in Teen Vogue.

She's not the most conventional model, and she is on the short size but she suits the cute styling and fiery red lipstick of the editorial so well. Oh, and she's quite something on the runway too:

She has a touch of Lara Stone on the runway, she looks like she is about to break into a smirk in every picture. Oh, and that shock of flaming red hair makes me want to dye my own hair red. I can't wait to see her on the runway again for Fall 2010 - I hope she turns up in London again!

A Master Class in Deconstruction

I'll be honest I've been a little nervous about blogging about Lanvin Mens Fall 2010, mainly because I haven't really blogged about menswear before in spite of my interest in it. This show was just too good not to post though, it was so futuristic but not intimidating as futurism can so often be. I can't wait to see it in the pages of Another Man and Fantastic Man because what a collection it was, easily my favourite show from the Fall 10 season,

The emphasis on the waist is an interesting detail, and makes what is quite a layered look look more refined. The slick back hair makes me think of Pat Bateman - after he had safely manouevered the financial crisis he comes back with a harder edge.

The last look has to be one of the most perfect mens coats I've ever seen, the navy blue colour makes it more of a statement coat and the classic cut complete with added zips makes it look so modern.

But for me, what completed the show was the details; the unfinished seems, the cumber band and the heavy utility belt.

Purple Rain

This has to be one of the most intriguing paparazzi pictures of an outfit ever. It's Ashley Olsen attending a pre-Golden Globes party, and the only shot is of the back of her dress! Purple is so underused on the red carpet, and I love her Chanel Hair clip.
It's such an old school look, and it appears that she is holding velvet gloves in her hand too. I'm sure the dress is vintage, and she really seems to be into prim and proper style at the moment:

For such a petite girl, she really wears this dress well. The purple lipstick stops the look from being too Victorian, and it finally seems like something new on the red carpet. For such a Victorian inspired look, it looks so modern.

Oh, and it's not just Ashley who's inspiring me right now, Mary Kate seems to have regained her knack for choosing perfect street style looks. I love nothing more than wearing all black, and she's bought back the Balenciaga Fall 2006 boots that I continue to dream about and desperately try to find on Ebay (In a Size 7 if anyone is selling!)

I'm generally drawn to models with dark, mysterious features the likes of Meghan Collision, Freja and Marina Perez, but recently I can't get enough of the American (Utah born) beauty Hannah Holman. I was sure she was Swedish when I first saw pictures of her, those invisible eyebrows, perfectly tanned skin and beautiful natural blonde hair. I just adore her.

It's something so rare for a new model on the scene to not really resemble anyone before her, I see hints of Iselin and Querelle but she's alot more delicate featured than that. This girls rise to fame is sure to commence soon. She landed the Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 10 campaign, and is sure to be a runway star come Feburary for the shows.

Pringle Pre-Fall 2010

It's hard to find fully practical fall collections, the only brand that consistently produces fantastic coats is Burberry, but they do tend to all look the same. The clothes never look, well warm enough. But really, when is high fashion ever practical? Well it turns out it can be, with Pringle's Pre-Fall collection. The Scottish brand has produced some beautiful ad campaigns (who could forget Tilda Swinton's appearance in the mens campaign this season?) the last few seasons, and I do always take a glance at their collections. I think this collection deserves alot more attention though:

I love that really high neck coat mixed with a chunky sweater, the neutral tones and the simple bun - because no hair style manages to withstand the elements of the British weather.

I've been seeing alot of trouser style leggings (I refuse to call them treggings!) filtering into the British high street. But this almost long-john style looks surprisingly fresh compared to the tired look of most leggings.

Okay, I know I said practical, and this doesn't look very warm but I adore the laser cut collar. The longer length of the jacket, making it look more like a coat - it's a cozy and luxurious look.

The Ultimate In Denim

Thoughts? I adore them, but imagine how difficult it would be getting them on and off. I can't imagine tripping over in them in skyscraper heels, ouchies.

Miu Miu S/S 10

I just can't get enough of this collection right now, it was just everything I associate with Miu Miu - girlish but not too cute, great accessories and some interesting party dresses all styled in the most interesting ways.

I love the new length of trouser Miu Miu used too, it's not too high on the waist but will be a great summer wardrobe staple.

I can't wait to see how some of the closing dresses are going to be styled in the months to come, if anything the back of the dress was more intricate and detailed than the front.

Once again I'm finding myself dreaming of divine dresses, but this time it's for award season. It may be a little premature, but the Oscar film season is just about upon us. I'm already looking forward to the new year and the Golden Globes/Oscars and myriad award seasons red carpets. I'm sure I'm not the only one who imagines exactly what dresses they'd select, and especially what designers they'd love to represent who just don't get enough love. Now that the winter is fully upon us poor UK bloggers I really need to start considering warm winter wear. It's not the sort of thing you can look to celebrities for inspiration because they are ferried around in lovely warm SUV's and don't have to walk anywhere in the cold. I still haven't found many great winter outfits, it seems so very pointless to then throw a big coat over it (even if it is a Jil Sander for Uniqlo coat), don't you think? But Phi Fall 09.10 is definitely the direction I would like to be heading in.

It's all very Rihanna on a cold night out. So much black, leather, fur and zippers. It's just such simple perfection, and fairly easy to do on a smaller budget. Just love this look for winter.

Liu is such a star, and then she walked for Victoria's Secret, becoming the first Asian model ever to walk for the brand. She just pulls off every style on the runway, and knows how to pose in editorials:

Dreaming of Summer

Just before the Christmas party season I inevitably start dreaming of summer, where I'm tanned with long blonde (unfortunately, I'm as pale as snow and have long black hair). This summer dreaming doesn't help when the Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 10 is just so good. The more I look at it, the more I fall in love - the clash of colours, vibrant lipstick and cute hair bows are everything I want to wear right now. Except, there's frost on the ground in England right now, and it's too rainy to do anything nice with my hair. Still, I can dream:

I'm just obsessed. Definitely going to have to get some brightly coloured MAC lipstick to get me through the winter.

When did Leighton Meester get so bloody annoying and Blake Lively become so fabulous? As a fellow brunette I always erred on the side of Leighton, especially as she didn't seem to get as much exposure as Blake. Whilst Blake had the cover of W & US Vogue, Leighton only had Teen Vogue. But after reading her Glamour UK article it must be because Leighton is so damn obnoxious. "I've hated every boyfriend I've ever had" she comes across as so bitter. I don't seem to remember her previous interviews being like this?

Anyway, I picked up the new Nylon yesterday with Blake Lively on the cover (for research purposes) and she came across as so, cheerful and appreciative of her success, and basically someone you'd like to be friends with.

Doesn't she seem lovely? And a fellow Topshop lover too (as a London blogger I do feel a little spoilt that I have grown with a Topshop store in every town). I like that she doesn't use a stylist either. Leighton on the other hand is getting ridiculously overstyled:

Now that Gossip Girl is going downhill I truly miss The OC. The first season was so good and it was one of the only programmes my friends & I religiously watched. I don't think I had a favourite character though, but Rachel Bilson always seemed like such a cutie and her and Adam Brody were THE Hollywood couple. Although, she's moved onto Hayden Christensen and I hadn't heard much about her. Until, I found this photoshoot in the new Flaunt magazine:

Doesn't she look amazing? I doubt Coop would approve though. Great styling and the the make up looks fantastic too.

So, I found her thread on The Fashion Spot and she's always been well known for her girlie style but two of her most recent outfits really caught my eye:

Aren't they the perfect black slim cut trousers? I'd love to know where they are from. They fit her petite frame perfectly and make her look alot taller than she is.

I applaud anyone who can pull of neutrals like this. Such a great dress shape too, but in quite a difficult colour to pull off. Even the grey tights don't make this look frumpy. Rachel might just be one of my new style crush.

As an avid viewer of the Rachel Zoe project, I must admit when I look through runway collections I do make a mental note of dresses I can't wait to see on the red carpet. More often than not it's inevitable the dress will be modified into something more paparazzi friendly, but as I was looking at Elie Saab S/S 10 I realised the art of the perfect dress.
Elie is not one of my must see collections but I always find myself browsing through his collections (and dreaming of the dresses I'd like to wear), and his collection this season was one of his absolute best.

I can't wait to see who wears these on the red carpet!

I don't know about you, but when Halloween season creeps around I invariably always want to go as something completely unscary. I'm not sure what it is but the usual witch's & ghouls option just doesn't appeal to me now I'm past the age of ten, and I'm definitely not one of those girls that goes down the slutty 'dressed in underwear but it's okay because it's halloween' road. The Dress That Saved Paris

I don't know about you, but Paris fashion week was really lacking for me. Balenciaga, McQueen and Givenchy failed to really impress me, in fact my only favourite that didn't let me down was Rick Owens. But, still there wasn't a beautiful cocktail dress that took my breath away. Until, this closing look at Lanvin, worn by the divine Abbey Lee (isn't it something when a favourite look of yours is put on your favourite model?). Alber, once again, I salute you.

Even on this little blog of mine I don't want to give this...thing anymore attention, so instead I will just post Women's Wear Daily review of her 'runway collection' as 'creative director' at Emanuel Ungaro:

Lindsay, it’s time to get serious about reviving the acting career. After just one season, one show, Mounir Moufarrige’s Lindsay-plus-one experiment is off to a troubled start. Lindsay Lohan, the house’s “creative director,” and designer Estrella Archs, (who probably got the job in part for her willingness to sketch in Lohan’s shadow, and probably took it for its high-profile heritage), made their joint debut on Sunday in an effort that was, quite simply, an embarrassment.

To be fair, there was something of a “Mean Girls” motif at play. The fashion world, or at least its old-fashioned, traditional arm, greeted the Lohan appointment with endless snickers and rolled eyes. Its members expected, perhaps even hoped for, the proverbial train wreck. And so it came, a collision of fashion, controversial celebrity and massive publicity that resulted in the most frenzied door scene we’ve seen in years, especially at the geezer venue Carrousel du Louvre, as well as a beefed-up photographers’ pit.

As for the clothes, they looked cheesy and dated, as has often been the case chez Ungaro during the post-Emanuel revolving door of designers. Hot pink, orange and flashy, with an overworked heart motif relentless in its execution, the collection displayed none of the promised younger side Lohan was supposed to deliver. Nor in a million years would one guess that the lineup was designed by one young woman and “creative directed” by another. Glitter heart pasties all around, ladies?

As for Lohan, she’ll weather the criticism, hardly her first or her juiciest, and move on when her contract allows. But Archs has her work cut out for her. Backstage after the show, she said the collection “had to be designed very quickly.” Perhaps that was the problem. This storied house has been in disarray for years, and though Archs’ debut provided no indication that she’s up to the challenge, she should be given the chance to find out without a younger, nonskilled judge with theoretical veto power hovering about. (Let’s just say the ladies’ joint bow didn’t radiate chemistry.)

No one ever said fashion design is brain surgery. It’s a different discipline altogether. But it is indeed a discipline and a commercial art, a fact variously muted and underscored by the celebrity infiltration of the last decade. And like brain surgery — yes, like brain surgery and all disciplines at which people work for years to develop proficiency — it has its rare geniuses and capable practitioners, all of whom must possess talent, skill and dedication. Being a young, pretty, controversial woman who looks good in clothes and photo ops just isn’t enough.
